The construction of the stadium started in June 2011. It opened as the largest venue by capacity in Azerbaijan. The national football team of Azerbaijan played numerous matches at the stadium. In 2017, the Bakı Olimpiya stadionu hosted its first-ever UEFA Champions League game. 67,000 people attended the football match. In 2021, the venue hosted four matches for the European championship for national football teams. The Czech Republic, Denmark, Wales, the Swiss Confederation and Türkiye played European football championship games at the stadium named Bakı Olimpiya stadionu.
