The stadium is known as one of the major sports venues in Zimbabwe. Dynamos Football Club use the Rufaro Stadium for home matches. In 1998, they became the first football club from Zimbabwe in a CAF Champions League final. Dynamos FC lost the African championship final against ASEC from the Côte d’Ivoire. In 2012, Dynamos Football Club became the first Zimbabwean football club with 20 top-flight league titles.
