The Rand Stadium is also known as a venue for boxing. It became one of the stadiums used by the national football team of South Africa, nicknamed Bafana Bafana. In 1996, they were crowned African football champions for the first time in their history. South Africa won the title after defeating Tunisia 2-0. The game between South Africa and Tunisia took place in Johannesburg in front of tens of thousands of spectators. Mark Frank Williams scored both goals in the match. In 1998, Bafana Bafana made their debut in the prestigious FIFA World Cup. They faced Denmark, the French Republic and South Africa in their maiden FIFA World Cup participation.
