Extra stadium info – DHL Stadium
The construction of the stadium, which became the largest sports venue by capacity in Cape Town, started in 2007. It is used for several events, like concerts, football, rugby sevens, rugby union and tennis. Marshall Bruce Mathers, commonly known as Eminem, performed at the venue. The rap legend became the best-selling artist of the 2000s in the United States. 37,000 people attended his concert at the DHL Stadium in 2014.
Tennis
In 2020, 51,000 people attended a tennis event at the DHL Stadium. It became the highest attendance for a tennis event ever. Millions of dollars were raised in aid of children’s education in Africa with the event. The event consisted of a singles match and a doubles match. The singles game was a game between the tennis legends Rafael Nadal Parera from Spain and Roger Federer from the Swiss Confederation. The doubles match was won by Roger Federer and William Henry Gates, commonly known as Bill Gates. William Henry Gates, who was born in the United States, became the richest person in the world. Federer and Gates defeated Nadal and Trevor Noah in the match.
The 2010 FIFA World Cup
The DHL Stadium was one of the venues for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. 64,000 people showed up for the first-ever FIFA World Cup match at the stadium. The game between the national football teams of Uruguay and the French Republic ended in a 0-0 draw. Algeria, the Argentine Republic, Cameroon, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, England, Germany, the Italian Republic, the Netherlands, Paraguay, the Portuguese Republic and Spain also played FIFA World Cup games at the DHL Stadium.
Tenants
Cape Town City Football Club, the Stormers and the Western Province use the DHL Stadium for home games. They are among the first South African sports clubs with 100,000 followers on their main social media page. The Stormers played in the last Super 14 final in Johannesburg, which attracted a crowd of 36,000. The league was renamed in 2010. It was renamed several times.
The Cape Town Spurs and Johannes Adrianus Vonk
The club which is currently known as the Cape Town Spurs played numerous home games at the DHL Stadium. The former goalkeeper Johannes Adrianus Vonk ended his professional football career with the club which is currently known as Cape Town Spurs Football Club. In 1998, he was the goalkeeper of South Africa in their first-ever FIFA World Cup game. The national football team of the French Republic won the game, which took place in the French city of Marseille in front of 55,000 spectators, 3-0.
