The construction of the stadium, which became the largest sports venue by capacity in Cape Town, started in 2007. It is used for several events, like concerts, football, rugby sevens, rugby union and tennis. In 2020, 51,000 people attended a tennis match at the venue. Millions of dollars were raised in aid of children’s education in Africa with the event.
The 2010 FIFA World Cup
The DHL Stadium was one of the venues for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. 64,000 people showed up for the first-ever FIFA World Cup match at the stadium. The game between the national football teams of Uruguay and the French Republic ended in a 0-0 draw. Algeria, the Argentine Republic, Cameroon, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, England, Germany, the Italian Republic, the Netherlands, Paraguay, the Portuguese Republic and Spain also played FIFA World Cup games at the DHL Stadium.
Tenants
Cape Town City Football Club, the Stormers and Western Province use the DHL Stadium for home games. They are among the first South African sports clubs with 100,000 followers on their main social media page. The Stormers played in the last Super 14 final in Johannesburg, which attracted a crowd of 36,000. The league was renamed in 2010. It was renamed several times.
The Cape Town Spurs and Johannes Adrianus Vonk
The club which is currently known as the Cape Town Spurs played numerous home games at the DHL Stadium. The former goalkeeper Johannes Adrianus Vonk ended his professional football career with the club which is currently known as Cape Town Spurs Football Club. In 1998, he was the goalkeeper of South Africa in their first-ever FIFA World Cup game. The national football team of the French Republic won the game, which took place in the French city of Marseille in front of 55,000 spectators, 3-0.
