Extra stadium info – Stade Abdoulaye Wade
The construction of the venue, which is also known as the Stade du Sénégal, started in February 2020. The stadium is named after a former president of Senegal. It opened with a football match. Several African football legends played in that game. The Stade Abdoulaye Wade is used by the national football team of Senegal. They are also known as Les Lions de la Téranga.
The FIFA World Cup and the Africa Cup of Nations
Les Lions de la Téranga played their first-ever FIFA World Cup games in 2002. Bruno Jean Cornil Metsu, who was born in the French Republic in 1954, was the manager of the team during the world championship. He also managed the national football teams of Guinee, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar. The national football footbal team of Senegal reached the quarter-finals of the tournament. They became the second African team in a FIFA World Cup quarter-final. Cameroon became the first one in 1990. Les Lions de la Téranga won the Africa Cup of Nations, the African championship for national football teams, in 2022 for the first time in their history. They won the title after beating Egypt in a penalty shoot-out.
