The construction of the arena started in 2016. It opened as one of the largest venues by capacity in Senegal. Gorgui Sy Dieng attended the inauguration of the Dakar Arena. He became the first basketball player from Senegal with 100,000 followers on his main social media page. Gorgui Sy Dieng played numerous matches for the national basketball team of Senegal. He played his first NBA games for the Minnesota Timberwolves from the United States.
