The Enyimba International Stadium became the largest sports venue by capacity in the city of Aba. Enyima, one of the first Nigerian sports clubs with 100,000 followers on its main social media page, was founded in 1976. They use the Enyimba International Stadium for home games. Enyimba Football Club drew numerous home attendances above the current capacity of 16,000 of the Enyimba International Stadium. On 3 November 2008, the Enyimba International Stadium received a temporary ban after fans attacked match officials after a home game of Enyimba FC.
Nigerian football titles
Enyimba Football Club won the top-flight football league of Nigeria various times. Enyimba, which means Peoples’ Elephant, won three consecutive Nigerian top division titles between 2001 and 2003. In 2001, they won the Nigerian super cup for the first time in their history. Enyimba won their second Nigerian super cup title in 2003. In 2005, they won the Nigerian cup tournament for the first time in their history. Enyimba won the Nigerian cup tournament in 2009 for the second time in their history.
The African championship for football clubs
Enyimba International Football Club won the CAF Champions League in 2003 for the first time in their history. They were crowned African football champions after beating the Egyptian side Ismaily in a two-legged final. The club from Aba won the first leg and they lost the second leg. Enyimba became the first Nigerian football club with a continental championship title after beating Ismaily. One year later, Enyimba FC won the African championship for football clubs again. They won the title after defeating ES Sahel in a two-legged final. The first leg took place in the Tunisian city of Sousse and the second leg took place in the Nigerian city of Abuja. Tens of thousands of people showed up for the second leg in Abuja. A penalty shoot-out was needed to determine a winner.
