The venue is also known as a venue for athletics and rugby union. The national football team of Namibia, nicknamed Brave Warriors, use the Independence Stadium for home games. They played their first-ever African football championship game on 8 February 1998. The match took place in Burkina Faso. Eliphas Shivute scored the first two goals for Namibia in the game. Ricardo Mannetti scored the third goal for Namibia in the match. The national football team of the Côte d’Ivoire won the game after scoring four goals.
