The construction of the stadium, which is among the main Moroccan sports venues, started in 1994. The national football team of Morocco played their first match at the stadium on 12 January 2008. They won the game against Zambia 2-0. In 2022, Morocco became the first national football team from Africa in a FIFA World Cup semi-final. They lost the match against the French Republic, commonly known as France.
