In 2002, the stadium hosted the final of the African championship for national football teams. Tens of thousands of people attended the game, which was won by Cameroon after defeating Senegal. In 1990, Cameroon became the first national football team from Africa in the quarter-finals of the FIFA World Cup. In 1972, they reached the final of the African championship for national football teams for the first time in their history. Karl-Heinz Weigang was the manager of Mali that year. The former German manager died in 2017 at the age of 81.
