The Bingu National Stadium is also used for athletics. It hosted numerous home games for the national football team of Malawi. On 29 April 2017, they lost their first match at the Bingu National Stadium against Madagascar. Ronny Van Geneugden from Belgium was the manager of Malawi that day. In 1984, the national football team of Malawi participated in the African Cup of Nations for the first time in their history. Algeria, Cameroon, the Côte d’Ivoire, Egypt, Ghana, Nigeria and Togo also participated in the African football championship.

Silver Strikers Football Club, also known as The Bankers, use the Bingu National Stadium for home games. The football club was founded in 1977. The Mighty Wanderers, the Nyayo Big Bullets and the Silver Strikers became the first sports clubs from Malawi with 100,000 followers on their main social media page. They all won the top-flight football league of Malawi multiple times.
