Andrew Hawkins, a descendent of a former slave trader, knelt in chains at the stadium to ask forgiveness for his ancestor’s involvement in the slave trade. His chains were symbolically removed as a sign of forgiveness and reconciliation. The national football team of the Gambia, also known as The Scorpions, use the Independence Stadium for home games. They played their first-ever Africa Cup of Nations match in 2022. The Gambia lost the game against Mauritania. They reached the quarter-finals of the tournament. Cameroon defeated the Gambia in the quarter-finals.
