In 2017, the stadium was one of the venues for the Africa Cup of Nations. On 16 January 2017, the Stade d’Oyem hosted its first-ever game for the Africa Cup of Nations. The national football team of the Côte d’Ivoire faced Togo in that match, which ended in a goalless draw. The Democratic Republic of the Congo won the second Africa Cup of Nations game at the Stade d’Oyem. They won the match after beating Morocco. Junior Kabananga Kalonji scored the only goal of the game. He became the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations record goalscorer after scoring three goals in the tournament. Junior Kabananga Kalonji scored his second 2017 Africa Cup of Nations goal against the Côte d’Ivoire. He also scored against Togo in the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations.

More Africa Cup of Nations matches

On 20 January 2017, the Stade d’Oyem hosted its third Africa Cup of Nations match. The national football team of the Côte d’Ivoire faced the Democratic Republic of the Congo in that game, which ended in a 2-2 draw. Morocco won the following two Africa Cup of Nations games at the Stade d’Oyem after defeating Togo and the Côte d’Ivoire. The sixth Africa Cup of Nations group-stage match at the stadium took place on 25 January 2017. The game between Uganda and Mali ended in a 1-1 draw.

The knockout stage of the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations

The Stade d’Oyem also hosted a knockout-stage game for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations. The match took place on 29 January 2017. The national football team of Ghana won the game after beating the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Jordan Pierre Ayew scored the first goal of the match. His brother André Morgan Rami Ayew scored the second goal of the match.
