The Alexandria Stadium is among the main sports venues in the city of Alexandria. It hosted various football matches for the Africa Cup of Nations. The first-ever Africa Cup of Nations knockout stage match at the Alexandria Stadium was won by Cameroon after beating the Côte d’Ivoire 1-0. It was a round-of-16 match. In 2019, Nigeria won the second one after defeating Cameroon 3-2. The game between Nigeria and Cameroon also was a round-of-16 match. Madagascar reached the quarter-finals of the African football championship for the first time in their history after the missed penalty of Yannick Bolasie. Nicolas Dupuis from the French Republic was the manager of Madagascar during the tournament.
Al-Ittihad Alexandria and Zamalek
Al-Ittihad Alexandria, one of the major Egyptian football clubs, use the Alexandria Stadium for home games. The club was founded in 1914. They won the Egyptian cup several times. In 1922, Al-Ittihad Alexandria played in the first-ever Egyptian cup final. They lost the game against Zamalek, the second Egyptian sports club with 1 million followers on its main social media page.
