The stadium is also known as Stade de la Kenya. It is named after Frédéric Kibassa Maliba, a former politician who died in 2003 at the age of 63. Tout Puissant Mazembe, the first African football club in a world championship final, played numerous home games at the venue. FC Saint-Éloi Lupopo, nicknamed Les Cheminots, use the Stade omnisport Kibassa-Maliba for home matches. The club was founded in 1939. Football Club Saint-Éloi Lupopo won several domestic top-flight football league titles.
