The stadium is among the largest sports venues by capacity in Ecuador. Club Sport Emelec use the stadium for home games. They won the Ecuadorian top-flight football league in 2002 for the 10th time in their history. Emelec and their rivals Barcelona SC became the first sports clubs from Guayaquil with a value of at least $10 million.
