The construction of the venue, which is also known as the Western Sydney Stadium, started in 2016. It opened with a rugby league match between the Parramatta Eels and the Wests Tigers. The Eels won the game 51-6 in front of a crowd of 29,000. A few days later, the CommBank Stadium hosted its first-ever rugby union game. The Waratahs from New South Wales lost the game against the Sharks from South Africa. 10,000 spectators attended the match.
The first football match at the CommBank Stadium
On 20 July 2019, the CommBank Stadium hosted its first football match. The Western Sydney Wanderers lost the game against Leeds United from the United Kingdom. 24,000 fans showed up for the match. Mateusz Piotr Bogusz scored the first goal of the game. Kwame Adzenyina Yeboah scored the only goal for the Wanderers in the match. Pablo Hernández Domínguez scored the winning goal for Leeds United in the last seconds of the game.
The Asian championship for football clubs
In 2014, the Western Sydney Wanderers became the first football club from Australia with an Asian championship title. They won the continental tournament after beating the Saudi side Al-Hilal, one of the first sports clubs from Asia with 10 million followers on its main social media page, in a two-legged final. The Wanderers reached the final after Mateo Poljak from Croatia and Shannon Cole from Australia scored against the Korean side FC Seoul.
The world championship for football clubs
The Western Sydney Wanderers played their first-ever FIFA Club World Cup match in 2014. They were defeated by the Mexican side Cruz Azul in the quarter-finals of the world championship. The quarter-final between the Wanderers and Cruz Azul took place in Morocco. The Spanish football giants Real Madrid won the 2014 FIFA Club World Cup after beating the Argentine side San Lorenzo.
