The construction costs of the Acrisure Stadium, which opened as the Heinz Field, were $281 million. It opened with a concert. The stadium is used for several events, like American football, concerts, ice hockey and football. On 1 January 2011, the Acrisure Stadium hosted its first-ever NHL Winter Classic. 68,000 people attended the ice hockey match between the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Washington Capitals. The Capitals won the match. On 25 February 2017, the venue hosted its second NHL Winter Classic. The Pittsburgh Penguins won the game after defeating the Philadelphia Flyers 4-2. 67,000 fans showed up for the event.
Football
On 27 July 2014, the Acrisure Stadium hosted its first-ever match between two football clubs. The English side Manchester City Football Club won the International Champions Cup game against the Italian side AC Milan 5-1. 34,000 spectators showed up for the game. In 1963, AC Milan became the first Italian football club with a European championship title after beating the Portuguese side Benfica in London. Later, AC Milan won several world championship titles. Benfica won the second International Champions Cup game at the Acrisure Stadium after beating the German side Borussia Dortmund. The Portuguese side won the match after a penalty shoot-out.
Tenants
The Pittsburgh Panthers and the Pittsburgh Steelers both moved to the stadium in 2001. The Panthers played their first-ever American football match at the Acrisure Stadium on 1 September 2001. They won the game 31-0 in front of 47,000 fans. The Pittsburgh Steelers, one of the oldest National Football League clubs, won the Super Bowl several times. 62,000 people attended their first-ever NFL game at the Acrisure Stadium. The Steelers won the match against the Cincinnati Bengals, which took place on 7 October 2001, 16-7.
Elvis Presley
Elvis Aaron Presley, also known as the King of Rock and Roll, became a fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers. The former singer and actor was born in Mississippi in 1935. He is widely regarded as one of the most significant cultural figures of the 20th century. In 1956, Elvis made his film debut in Love Me Tender. He became the best-selling solo artist in the world during his music career.
