The construction of the MetLife Stadium started in 2007. The venue, which is adjacent to the site of the former Giants Stadium, opened in 2010 as the most expensive stadium ever built. Its construction costs were $1.6 billion. The stadium was known as the New Meadowlands Stadium between 2010 and 2011. The Metlife Stadium is mainly used for American football matches. It is also known as a venue for other events, like concerts, field lacrosse, football and wrestling. The venue opened with three intercollegiate field lacrosse games.
Football at the MetLife Stadium
On 7 May 2010, 77,000 people showed up for the first football match at the stadium. The game was between the national football teams of Ecuador and the United Mexican States. The second football game at the MetLife Stadium was won by Brazil after beating the United States. In 2002, the national football team of Brazil became the first team with five FIFA World Cup titles after defeating Germany in Japan. On 3 August 2016, the Spanish side Real Madrid won a football game against the German side Bayern München at the MetLife Stadium in front of 82,000 spectators. Danilo Luiz da Silva from Brazil scored the only goal of the match. Real Madrid became the first sports club with 100 million followers on its main social media page.
The Super Bowl
On 25 May 2014, the MetLife Stadium hosted its first-ever Super Bowl. It was the 48th edition of the American football tournament. The Seattle Seahawks from Washington won the game against the Denver Broncos from Colorado 43-8 in front of 82,000 spectators. It became the first Super Bowl victory for the Seahawks. The Broncos won the Super Bowl in 1998 for the first time in their history after beating the Green Bay Packers. One year later, the Denver Broncos won their second Super Bowl title after defeating the Atlanta Falcons.
The Giants and the Jets
The New York Giants and the New York Jets both moved to the MetLife Stadium in 2010. The Giants drew an attendance of 77,000 in the first NFL game at the stadium. They won the match against Panther Football 31-18. One day later, the Jets played their first NFL game at the stadium, which they lost against the Baltimore Ravens in front of 78,000 fans. The New York Giants American football club was founded in 1925 and the New York Jets American football club was founded in 1959 under a different name. They are both among the most popular American football clubs in the world. The Jets won the Super Bowl in 1969 for the first time in their history and the Giants won the Super Bowl in 1987 for the first time in their history.
