The construction of the football venue started in 1952. It hosted eight football matches for the 1970 FIFA World Cup. The stadium’s first-ever FIFA World Cup match was won by the national football team of England after beating Peru 1-0. 50,000 people showed up for the game. Brazil won the second FIFA World Cup game at the venue after beating the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic. The Czechoslovak Socialist Republic also lost against Romania and England in the stadium’s third and sixth world championship game. Brazil also won the fourth, fifth, seventh and eighth 1970 FIFA World Cup matches at the Estadio Jalisco.
The 1986 FIFA World Cup
The Estadio Jalisco hosted six football matches for the 1986 FIFA World Cup. Brazil won the group-stage games of the 1986 FIFA World Cup at the Estadio Jalisco. They faced Spain, Algeria and England in the group stage. The Estadio Jalisco also hosted a quarter-final and a semi-final for the 1986 FIFA World Cup. The national football team of the Argentine Republic, commonly known as Argentina, won the 1986 FIFA World Cup.
Atlas FC and Rafael Márquez Álvarez
Atlas Fútbol Club moved to the Estadio Jalisco in 1960. The club was founded in 1916. They won the Mexican top-flight football league in 1951 for the first time in their history. Rafael Márquez Álvarez, the first football player from the United Mexican States in a FIFA Club World Cup final, started and ended his professional football career with Atlas. He played numerous matches for the Spanish side FC Barcelona, one of the major sports clubs in the world. Rafael Márquez Álvarez also played professional football for AS Monaco, Red Bull New York, Club León and Hellas Verona. He scored numerous goals for the national football team of the United Mexican States.
CD Guadalajara
Club Deportivo Guadalajara, nicknamed Chivas, are known as the arch-rivals of Atlas. Chivas played numerous home games at the Estadio Jalisco. In 1962, they won the inaugural edition of the North American championship for football clubs. In 1997, CD Guadalajara became the first Mexican football club with 10 top-flight league titles. Club América became the second one.
Leones Negros
Club Leones Negros de la Universidad de Guadalajara moved to the stadium named Estadio Jalisco in 1970. The same year, the club was founded. The Leones Negros represent the university named Universidad de Guadalajara. They played numerous matches in the top-flight football league of the United Mexican States, commonly known as Mexico.
