A statue of the Jamaican reggae legend Robert Nesta Marley, commonly known as Bob Marley, can be found near the venue. The National Stadium is used by the national football team of Jamaica. They are also known as the Reggae Boyz and they qualified for the FIFA World Cup in 1998 for the first time in their history. The Reggae Boyz lost their first-ever world championship game against Croatia. They also lost their second FIFA World Cup game. The Argentine Republic won the game 5-0. Jamaica won their third FIFA World Cup game. Theodore Eccleston Whitmore scored twice for Jamaica and Masashi Nakayama scored once for Japan in that match.
