The stadium opened with a football match between FC Luzern and FC Thun. In 1960, FC Luzern won their first-ever Swiss cup title. They won the Swiss top-flight football league in 1989 for the first time in their history. FC Luzern drew an average home attendance of 12,000 in that domestic league season.
