The national football teams of Colombia, Denmark, Iran, Japan, Panama, Peru, the Portuguese Republic and Tunisia played at the Mordovia Arena during the 2018 FIFA World Cup. On 16 June 2018, the stadium hosted its first-ever FIFA World Cup match. 40,000 people attended the football match between the national football teams of Peru and Denmark. Yussuf Yurary Poulsen from Denmark scored the first FIFA World Cup goal at the stadium. Shinji Kagawa, Juan Fernando Quintero Paniaguam, Yuya Osako, Ricardo Andrade Quaresma Bernardo, Karim Adil Ansarifard, Yassine Meriah, Fakhreddine ben Youssef and Wahbi Khazri also scored FIFA World Cup goals at the venue.
