Enyima, one of the first Nigerian sports clubs with 100,000 followers on its main social media page, use the stadium for home games. They drew numerous home attendances above the current capacity of 16,000 of the Enyimba International Stadium. The football club was founded in 1976 and they won the top-flight football league of Nigeria and the Nigerian cup tournament various times. Enyimba, which means Peoples’ Elephant, won three consecutive Nigerian top division titles between 2001 and 2003. In 2005, they won the Nigerian cup tournament for the first time in their history. On 3 November 2008, the Enyimba International Stadium received a temporary ban after fans attacked match officials after a home game of Enyimba.
The African championship for football clubs
Enyimba International Football Club won the CAF Champions League in 2003 for the first time in their history after beating the Egyptian side Ismaily in a two-legged final. The club from Aba won the first leg and they lost the second leg. Enyimba became the first Nigerian football club with a continental championship title after beating Ismaily. One year later, Enyimba won the African championship for football clubs again.
