Extra stadium info – Estádio Nacional do Zimpeto

The stadium was built with funds from the Chinese government. The national football team of Mozambique played numerous matches at the venue. In 1986, they played their first-ever match in the African championship for national football teams. Mozambique finished below Egypt, the Côte d’Ivoire and Senegal in the group stage of the tournament. Algeria, Cameroon, Morocco and Zambia played in the other group of the tournament. Egypt won the competition after beating Cameroon.

Mozambique versus Tunisia

On 16 January 1996, Mozambique gathered their first point at the African championship for national football teams after a 1-1 draw against Tunisia. Jorge Miguel Moreira Larrouy Fernandes, Manuel José Luís Bucuane and Sérgio Faife Matsolo played for Mozambique against Tunisia that day. They became the football players in the match who played at least 50 games for Mozambique in their life.
